The entry into whisky production was made possible through collaboration with Masataka Taketsuru, who brought the necessary knowledge from Scotland. The construction of the Yamazaki Distillery in 1923 marked the beginning of whisky production on a larger scale. Today, Suntory is Japan's largest whisky producer with the most and most prestigious awards. Thanks to international success, Suntory has become one of the largest spirits conglomerates globally. One of the recent developments includes the acquisition of Beam Inc. in 2014. The new Suntory subsidiary, named Beam-Suntory, distributes the globally renowned bourbon whiskey brand Jim Beam.
