In 1889, the Basel-based entrepreneur Rudolf Waeckerlin fell in love with the local rum during his visit to Jamaica. Upon returning home, he founded the Compagnie Rhumière de Bâle, shortly known as Coruba, with the intention of bringing Jamaican rum to Europe. Read more

Later, Waeckerlin returned to Jamaica and in 1929, he founded The Rum Company (Jamaica) Ltd. to oversee the rum production process in Jamaica. The rum continues to be produced in Jamaica, while blending and bottling for all of Europe still take place in Basel. Since 1962, Coruba Rum has been produced by Wray & Nephews. In December 2012, the spirits conglomerate Campari acquired the brand.
